H&M in South Africa

There is no brand bigger in Germany and Austria than H&M, also known as Hennes and Mauritz that has started its conquest of the European than the Global street wear market from roughly the Eighties. Today, thanks to its great campaigns and cooperation with the best designers and top models in the world H&M is a key street wear brand that is highly touted all over the world, for its trendy clothes and for its great affordable prices too. Let’s check out what we can find out on H&M and where we can get to find their stores in South Africa.

H&M was founded by designer Erling Persson who came up with the idea to create a brand that offers very trend oriented cheap clothes featured in attractive diversity. The idea behind the brand was further helped with the purchase of alone standing brands Hennes (women’s fashion) and Mauritz (Hunters clothes) to create the whole brand concept. The first store of H&M has soon become the favourite for teens, students and young adults.

H&M is a Swedish brand; however, its main market was always Austria, Germany and Switzerland. The brand has started up in the Seventies and its popularity has started to raise in the Eighties, thanks to its trendy and quite cheap clothes and a substantially growing collection, which you can get to see today. H&M has stores in most countries in the world, its popularity is peaking in Europe and Asia. In the Nineties, H&M had a sub-brand called Hennes, which was to offer an upper class sort of street wear collection but due to lack of interest, it has been closed down within a few years. Today the strength of H&M lies in offering so many different garments and accessories, in dozens of diverse styles.

The lingerie and the kids’ collection of H&M also play a big role in its popularity. Today, H&M offers multiple different co-brand which further diversify its collections. These include LOGG that is a „green” street wear brand, with a style very similar to US college style. H&M sells everything that has to do with clothes: menswear, baby and kids clothes, women’s collection, swimwear, sports collection. Shoes and accessories, lingerie and recently it is in the release of its first home collection. Since the big campaigns with notable designers H&M has a special collection the price of which is substantially higher than that of its basics. The company works a franchise system for its stores and its headquarters is located at Vasteras Sweden.

H&M today has stores in 53 countries and this number is still growing. South Africa is fond of fashion therefore if you look for H&M stores here you can be sure you will eventually find these. The country is not the only one to offer clothes of H&M: these are already very popular in both Northern Africa and in the Middle East too.

When you are looking for stores in South Africa, you may not be able to find the country in the search option. It’s because the first store in the country was to open in 2014 however the buildings are due to finish in the end of the year or in the beginning of 2015. The brand also has plans to open a store in Cape Town, so let’s hope both stores will be ready and open by the end of 2014.
